Prime minister refuses to say whether security concerns were raised about Chinese-born MP’s background

Labor has accused Scott Morrison of “hiding” behind the Australian Chinese community as the prime minister defends embattled MP Gladys Liu and rejects suggestions she is under Beijing’s influence.

As Labor targeted the government for a second day over Liu’s links to various Chinese groups, Morrison accused Labor of “smearing” the Chinese Australian diaspora by asking questions about her background, while refusing to reveal whether the government ever received any security advice about her suitability for parliament.
